weekend</title><content type='html'>In Canada it's Thanksgiving weekend (sorry if you already knew this, but it's important we all start at the same reference point for this story). The weather is amazing here in my neck of the woods so there's a lot of outdoor play AND a lot of fall yard stuff happening around our house, not to mention cooking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What we all need to know though is 'what's open tomorrow.' Can I get groceries for lunches tomorrow? Can I get bulbs and mulch for the garden tomorrow? Can we get bait for fishing tomorrow? I went searching for all these answers today and it was hard to find out. Holiday hours is what will make people shop tomorrow, so if you are open tell people. Put it on your sign, put it front and centre on your website not buried deep, put a poster on your door big enough I can see from the parking lot. Best place to announce it? How about to your fans on Facebook, twitter, etc. Send them a note right about now. I'm planning my tomorrow right now and as far as I can tell the only thing open is Starbucks. businesses</title><content type='html'>The recent situation with Awish Aslam (&lt;a href="http://m.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/conservative-tactics-keep-campaign-off-main-street-on-script/article1972543/?service=mobile"&gt;full story here&lt;/a&gt;) at a London conservative party event where she was kicked out because she also attended a liberal event that week got me thinking. If that same situation happened in business this is what it would look like...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Customer walks into restaurant.&lt;br /&gt;Host asks if they would like to be seated and seats them.&lt;br /&gt;Server comes up and says "Hey haven't you eaten at the restaurant down the street sometime before?"&lt;br /&gt;Customer says "yes once"&lt;br /&gt;Server escorts them out and tells them they are not welcome.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My guess is that that restaurant wouldn't be around much longer if they didn't server people that had been served elsewhere. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's a very close-minded strategy to only talk to people that don't talk to others. Not a way to run a business for sure.  Oh wait, our country is a business. My students could give you the full definition (at least I hope they could), but basically I'm not talking about your frequent email newsletters - those are more for brand awareness than direct marketing. Direct is about creating an instant response with a specific offer (a.k.a. often surfaces as a deal). So what should you include in your DR Email? Here's 10 things to consider:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;The &lt;b&gt;product&lt;/b&gt; - I know sounds obvious. But often it gets forgotten.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The picture - The benefit of an email vs radio direct campaign is the visual of the product so make sure to make it pretty too.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The&lt;b&gt; offer&lt;/b&gt; - why is this special? Why is any different than normal? Why should the reader care?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The&lt;b&gt; terms&lt;/b&gt; - what do they have to do to get it?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The&lt;b&gt; call to action&lt;/b&gt; - what do you want them to do right now? Print it? Forward it? Call? Click?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The stats - not for them to see, but vital to any DM campaign. Incorporate a tracking system for you to analyze the results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Design considerations:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;White space - eyes need a break, a place to rest and recuperate.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Contrast - black on grey is hard to read.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make sure there is an obvious way to read the content without html and on mobile devices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't include:&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;KISS - &lt;b&gt;keep it simple silly&lt;/b&gt;. Don't include multiple offers, multiple calls to action, multiple products. It's kind of an annual thing. Last year we went to the &lt;a href="http://www.ontariosciencecentre.ca/"&gt;Ontario Science Centre&lt;/a&gt; and to the &lt;a href="http://www.rom.on.ca/"&gt;ROM(Royal Ontario Museum)&lt;/a&gt;. James (and I actually) loved the ROM. It was amazing. So yesterday I suggested we go to the ROM&amp;nbsp; and he said "I guess we can if you want to, doesn't matter to me either way." I was shocked. Last year it was our favourite activity and now this non-committal response? So I asked why and he said "We've already been there and seen it." So I explained that they sometimes change some of the exhibits. His response.."So.. even if they change some, some of it will be the same and then it's just a waste of money."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you can't convince a 7 year old to do something twice that he thought was absolutely amazing, how are you going to convince someone when what you offer isn't absolutely amazing? I do it all the time. But I've started to reflect on that message and here are 10 things to think of when you utter that one word:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;You're too busy for this unimportant conversation.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;What you're doing is far more important than anything the asker could be working on.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;You're so busy being busy that you're not doing anything productive.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;You can't handle the work you have.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Balance isn't part of your life.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;You must be important to have soooo much on your plate - conceded huh?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Relationships aren't important just tasks are.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&amp;nbsp;Ok - so I don't have 10 this week.
